Due to intense boredom and monotony, it seems that the classroom is the perfect environment to induce sleep and awaken creative inspiration. Artist Jim Rugg (Street Angel / Afrodisiac) must agree with at least one of those sentiments, because he is about to launch a new exhibition entitled “Notebook Nerd”  at the IAm8Bit Gallery in Los Angeles, which features 50 comic and gaming-inspired masterpieces created with ballpoint pens and notebook paper.

The exhibition is set to open on May 25 and offers free admission. In addition, AdHouse is compiling the pieces into a reproduction of Rugg’s original notebooks, and is set to make its debut next month at HeroesCon in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Our own Amy Ratcliffe has posted an interview with the authors of A Feast of Ice and Fire: The Official Game of Thrones Companion Cookbook over on our sister site That’s Nerdalicious!

If you find yourself drooling over the feasts in Game of Thrones on HBO and/or the books upon which the series is based, you are going to want to check this out. You’ll learn more about the author’s culinary journeys in the land of Westeros—adventures you can take yourself when the book is released on May 29th.

Amy is also hard at work cooking up these recipes at home, so look for a review on That’s Nerdalicious later this month.

Head on over to That’s Nerdalicious to check out the interview.

Last weekend was a pretty amazing one for geeks. Friday was May the Fourth Be With You, The Avengers was released and smashed box office records, and Saturday brought Free Comic Book Day. The annual event takes place on the first Saturday of May, and it’s been going strong for ten years. Impressive, huh? Especially considering that free actually means free. It’s a day for comic book shops to dress to impress and attract new customers, a day when comic book creators are even bigger rock stars, and a day to introduce your non-comic book reading friends to the fun that is comics.

I visited three spots for the geek holiday this year, and as I expected, each location handled the day a little differently. I go to more than one store mostly because I’m curious to see what they all do to celebrate, and I don’t mind getting a variety of the available free comics. Speaking of that, I picked up seven free comics (including Archaia’s free hardcover) in my travels, and I devoured the stack as soon as I could.

Read about my experience along with a run-down of the stand-outs among the comics I picked up after the break.

The summer is almost here, and that means you’ll be spending more time outside (if you don’t buy Diablo III that is). On that note, we are giving away gadget bundle to a lucky reader—packed with useful accessories for your mobile devices.

Apparently, the work above was part of a “tryout page” from an artist trying to break into the comics biz way back in the ’90s—preseerved for posterity by the Marvel Bullpen’s Steve Bunche and Darren Auck. The work was never printed of course—presumably because the earth shattering awesomeness would have set the bar far too high for all Wolverine books to follow.

The original artist is unknown, so we are left to wonder what he had in mind for this meeting. My guess is that that a battle ensued, but the otherworldly power of Freddie’s voice rocked and pulverized Wolverine’s supposedly “unbreakable” adamantium bones.

If you read comic books, there’s been a time (or times) when you’ve pictured yourself in the story. Maybe you pretend you’re Captain America, Black Widow, Wolverine, or a new character you’ve imagined. At least, I’m guessing it isn’t just me who does this.

The Comics Factory has a team of digital artists ready to turn you into the (officially licensed) superhero you’ve always wanted to be. You can have your face blended into any of the hero costumes mentioned above, you can describe a custom character, or you can even partner up with friends for multi-hero/villain images. The finished images come in various sizes with framing options.

I think these would make a great gift for the comics fan in your life, and they’d be perfect for upcoming Mother’s and Father’s Days! Who wouldn’t want a picture of themselves as Spider-Man?

Check out more examples after the break.

BuzzFeed visited the DC Comics offices recently and received an early look at pages of art from the upcoming Before Watchmen series in a fancy three ring binder. It looks like the binder includes the script, but they only shared images showcasing character designs.

Regardless of how you feel about these Before Watchmen prequels, it’s hard to deny that the art is worth taking a second look at. I mean, the likes of Darwyn Cooke, Amanda Conner, Jae Lee, Joe Kubert and more fill out the talented roster pencilling the pages. Cooke and Conner in particular are in my top ten favorite comic book artists, and I’ll probably pick up at least the first issue of anything they work on including Watchmen.

See more character art after the break.

If you would prefer a hardcover edition of A Game of Thrones: The Graphic Novel Volume One as opposed to a digital one, you’ll be happy to know that it’s on sale for only $15.42. That’s 38% off the list price!

You’ve read the books. You’ve watched the hit series on HBO. Now acclaimed novelist Daniel Abraham and illustrator Tommy Patterson bring George R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy masterwork A Game of Thrones to majestic new life in the pages of this full-color graphic novel. Comprised of the initial six issues of the graphic series, this is the first volume in what is sure to be one of the most coveted collaborations of the year.

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.

I remember the days when Shia LaBeouf was just the cute and obnoxious brother on Even Stevens. Those were good times. Besides starring in films, it appears he’s also making comics. In fact, he made a surprise appearance at C2E2 in Chicago last weekend signing his work. Yeah, you read that right.
