We all know that lasers hold tremendous potential for all kinds of useful gadgetry. However, they can also be used for dangerous weapons and bizarre, pointless devices – and few are more pointlessly dangerous than ones featured in this list.

Nerd Approved reader Gregory Pinzone sent these photos of his awesome retro gaming-themed bathroom, which is adorned with Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong and Pac-Man imagery that covers everything from the walls, mirror and lighting – right down to the trash can. With this kind of attention to detail, you’d almost expect your waste to be 8-Bit. Needless to say, it would fit right in to our list of the world’s nerdiest bathrooms.

Thanks to Jurassic Park, we’ve all looked in our side view mirrors at one point or another and imagined a raging T-Rex charging at us from the next traffic light. But have you ever wondered how Steven Spielberg saw it in his director’s eye? Now you can get a look at how he brought it all together in this nearly 8-minute piece of footage from the making of the movie. Originally included in the press kit, this rarely seen piece of video shows Spielberg laying out the scenes, talking to actors and even filming and smiling as he sees the vision in his head become real.

A new advertisement for Virgin’s TiVo on demand service is causing knots in knickers at the BBC. The ad makes a pretty blatant reference to Doctor Who and oh by the way, stars David Tennant. Yeah, like that all accidentally came together.

The BBC wants Virgin to pull the ad as they think Virgin is breaking rules by using the Who aspect to cash in without giving BBC any dues. That, and the BBC doesn’t want to appear as though they endorse outside companies. Virgin, however, insists the commercial is about CEO Sir Richard Branson’s love of exploration. Riiiight.

I think it’s silly of Virgin to deny they aren’t taking advantage of the popularity of Tennant as the Tenth Doctor and the series. If they were worried about it being perceived that way, they wouldn’t have touched time travel in the commercial and included Tennant flipping to the series name and logo. That was foolish. Even though they are refrencing Doctor Who without permission, the BBC can’t deny that this is lots of free publicity for the show. That’s not such a bad outcome.

Check out the commercial after the break and let us know what you think.

I left my heart in Hogsmeade. I went to Orlando recently, and for the first time, I was excited to see something other than Disney. I felt like I was cheating on the Mouse, but I couldn’t wait to visit Wizarding World in Universal’s Islands of Adventure. It was everything I imagined Harry Potter-land would be, and it surpassed all of my expectations. I didn’t know a theme park atmosphere could be so charming, but I walked around in a state of absolute wonder for the duration of my visit. From my first cry of joy at seeing Hogsmeade to practically shedding tears at having to leave – Universal, you did good.

If this story is indeed true, you may for the first time hear the words “heartwarming” and “GameStop” in the same sentence. Apparently a drama recently unfolded at the video game chain in plain sight of shift manager Kristen Wolfe. The incident involved a young boy (roughly 10-12) who wanted to buy games with female protagonists, along with a “girl color” controller. The boy’s father decided that there wasn’t enough testosterone in his son’s selection and proceeded to go apesh*t, threatening to “whoop” the child if he didn’t get something else. At this point, the kid’s older brother (a high school wrestler) stepped in, reportedly saying to his dad:

“It’s my money, it’s my gift to him, if it’s what he wants I’m getting it for him, and if your [sic] going to hit anyone for it, it’s going to be me.”

After the father gave his older son a “stern stare down” and left the store, “big brother kisses little brother on the head, and says ‘Don’t worry dude.’” Obviously, the older brother succeeded in showing his father how a real man acts.

A Doctor Who superfan by the name of Erica Quinn turned her home in Glasgow into a TARDIS, of sorts, by painting the front door and propping up life-sized cutouts of the 10th and 11th Doctors, Amy Pond, Captain Jack Harkness and a Dalek in the windows. On holidays, she dresses up the cutouts in themed costumes.

In the future she hopes to build a replica of the console room in her entrance hall to complement her existing Doctor Who decor.

The BBC’s Christmas trailer features is loaded with network stars, but the only bit we’re really concerned with is the whole thing involving Matt Smith in an ugly sweater getting molested by Cyberman while Amy Pond looks on.
