Microsoft Vista Won’t Have WinFS

With all of Microsoft’s delays in delivering Vista, they still insisted that they would not be jettisoning any features in order to cut the development time. With the news that WinFS will not be released as a part of Vista, it seems that there are some features taking a hit.

WinFS was supposed to be a unifying file system that would allow all files to be in the same format. It was hailed as one of the cornerstones of Vista. To have it removed is certainly disappointing. They say that they will build part of it into their SQL server database, but that is of use to a very limited audience. Guess we have to wait to see what else does not make it into the final product, hopefully minor items.
