With HBO frantically working on several Game of Thrones spinoffs to pick up the slack when the series ends, Patrick McCarthy has offered a suggestion in the form of a 20-minute animated pilot based on The Doom of Valyria. The show would dive into the history of the Valyrian Freehold, and answer the lingering questions that surround the empire’s destruction.

This story is probably longshot in terms of getting picked up by HBO for a series, but we have to admire McCarthy’s dedication here. The video you are about to see took him two years to create. [click to continue…]

Over a five year period, Andrew Coats and Lou Hamou-Lhadj of Pixar created a 7-minute animated short entitled Borrowed Time which tells an adult tale of regret, perseverance and forgiveness with the studio’s typical blend of incredible animation and immersive storytelling.

A weathered Sheriff returns to the remains of an accident he has spent a lifetime trying to forget. With each step forward, the memories come flooding back. Faced with his mistake once again, he must find the strength to carry on.

Earlier this month we got our first glimpse at art from Patrick Schoenmaker’s Indiana Jones animated fan film and it was glorious. As promised, Schoenmaker and his team have delivered on the project, though the result is a short “opening sequence” as opposed to an actual film or TV length show. Still, it is more than enough to leave us wanting a whole series. Check it out below. [click to continue…]

Five years ago, artist Patrick Schoenmaker was commissioned to do an art print of an animation-style Indiana Jones for ACME Archives, which inspired him to begin work on an Indiana Jones animated movie.

Indiana Jones must have been my first true movie hero ever since I watched Raiders of the Lost Ark on a VCR way back when. Yes, some other heroes came and went, but Indy always held a special place. After Crystal Skull was released, my love for the character was once again fully ignited and with no new movies on the horizon back then, I decided to set up an Indiana Jones project of my own to keep the fire burning a little bit longer. So, that was back in 2011 and “a little bit longer” turned into 5 years of hard work. The end of the project is finally in sight.

It’s taken a lot of hard work, but The Adventures Of Indiana Jones will finally be released on September 29th. Given how good the art is, I think it’ll be something fans will love—but we’ll have to see how Disney/Lucasfilm responds to it. Check out some of the art below. [click to continue…]

YouTuber Jameserton decided that just playing Dark Souls 2 wasn’t enough – he decided to retell his story via the medium of animation. It took him two years to complete, and it’s pretty ruddy funny. Check it out in the player below.

deadly space

Space is beautiful. Space is mysterious. Space can kill you in many exciting and creative ways.

I think that the moral of this short animation by Thomas Lucas can be summed up thusly…

Don’t poke the monster.

penny arcade top

When talented artists collaborate, magic can happen. Such is the case with this music video by animator Uri Lotan and musician Jane Bordeaux.

The song, called Ma’agalim (meaning “circles”), is visually represented by a single wooden penny arcade doll walking through several beautiful scenes.

Making a LEGO version of that hit Hollywood trailer just got easier thanks to these phonetic Minifig heads.

Twelve heads cover the different mouth shapes made when talking, so all you need to do is change out the heads while you’re animating. Plus, worked with professional animators to get the heads just right.

The bottom line is that this is a great solution that will save you all kinds of time and money in post production.

dbz animation

The upcoming DBZ Tribute movie may not be official, but it looks like the quality level will be extremely high.

The CG film has brought together a ton of amazing artists including Javier Zumaeta, who has worked on PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Bruno Camara, who has worked on Ryse: Son of Rome. Though the video is still in production, you can check out some amazing stills and teaser trailers after the break.
