board game

If you’re a serious tabletop gamer, then visions of Geek Chic tables have probably been dancing in your head for several years now. These things are works of art that are absolutely the most beautiful gaming tables you will ever see. They even have beautiful names like Emissary, Envoy and Sultan. Yeah, they’re that cool.

Your purchasing experience starts off just like buying any old table. You pick walnut, maple or cherry wood and things like stain colors and hardware. But then you get to the gamer stuff where you pick things like player stations with flip-down desks, secret drawers, cup holders and dice towers. I know, right?

Now, Geek Chic has upped the ante with their new and improved Locus table which includes a multi-touch gaming surface on a high end screen that pops up out of the table and slides back down flat with just the press of a button.

Remember when special editions of Monopoly were you know, special? As in, they didn’t cover the entire shelf of the board game section? It hasn’t been that way for a while, and even virtual games, like World of Warcraft and StarCraft, are getting in on the action. Street Fighter is the latest to join the bunch—but USAPoly needs your opinion on which characters should get game pieces before the game is releaed. Click here to vote through March 5th.

It’s a good day when science fiction meets board games. If you like Settlers of Catan and Star Trek, you’ll be happy to know that Star Trek Catan is an actual product. It’s slated for March release in Germany, and it adds Trekkie flavor to the already awesome board game. There are space stations instead of cities and star ships instead of roads. From the official description:

In Star Trek Catan, players start the game with two small space stations at the intersection of three planets, with each planet supplying resources based on the result of a dice roll. Players collect and trade these resources – Dilithium, Tritanium, food, oxygen and water – in order to build spaceships that connect regions in the galaxy, establish small and large space stations at new intersection points in order to increase resource acquisition, and acquire development cards that provide victory points (VPs) or special abilities.

It doesn’t make the most sense that these two things would be mashed together, but it’s actually kind of intriguing because it’s so ridiculous. Plus, just look at the board design!

One custom Monopoly board this week wasn’t enough. First there was the Mass Effect version, and now we have one for Skyrim. Alex Bennett has designed a board that goes to Karthwasten and makes the players draw for guild missions.

There’s practically a different Monopoly theme for every day of the month. Apparently, there isn’t a Mass Effect edition though. DeviantArt user TommyFilth decided to rectify this problem and design a custom board and game pieces. I approve of the level of dedication.

Check out a gallery with more pieces after the break.

Play the classic game of Monopoly set in the year 3,000! In one of the latest Monopoly themes, you can fly around the board as Bender and buy places like Planet Express. If you don’t feel like having the usual Monopoly marathon, directions are included for a speedy 60 minute version. That’s probably the option they’d go for in space.

Monopoly is so much cooler when it happens in space… or when you’re pretending to buy space. This edition features the 11th Doctor and his companions. The Chance and Community Cards are Doctor Who themed, as is the board. You get a TARDIS, but you’ll also get regular pieces like the boot. It looks like you still buy houses instead of say, space ships as well. Blame that on timey wimey stuff. It works for the Doctor.

Apparently, Risk is vying to have as many special editions as Monopoly. The latest version incorporates the video game Metal Gear Solid. It’s an interesting selection to say the least.

You can pre-order Metal Gear Solid Risk on October 3rd. If you’re drooling over this edition with its 290 customer game pieces, get your order in on that day. Only 2,014 sets will be available, and it’s limited to two per customer.

Being what is no doubt a talented, thoughtful and all around awesome girlfriend, Elisabeth Redel created this Fallout Monopoly set for her boyfriend.

The board was printed on a 50 x 50 cm PVC plate. Every street is a location from the Fallout game. “GO” is now “G.O.A.T.” and “free parking” is the “please stand by” screen. Every card has one of the Fallout3 or Fallout New Vegas perks on it and has a really cool old playingcard image on the back.

Play Monopoly the Klingon way! There will be rituals, bloodletting, and guttural noises. I know you’re asking: what makes that different from any other game of Monopoly? This special Star Trek edition is limited to just 1,701 pieces and no attention to detail has been spared. The final game pieces are still a mystery, but the LE will at least include a 1/6th scale Chancellor’s Cane from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, carefully carved Birds of Prey, and a Klingon Empire proclamation.

Check out the video after the jump to see some of the work that has gone into building this game.
