If you keep up with the convention scene, you’ve probably heard about Morgan Spurlock’s documentary about conventions: Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope. Spurlock follows real people traveling to Comic-Con in San Diego, and the preview shows a toy collector, a cosplayer, and an aspiring comic book artist.

Basically. the film will show what the convention experience is like and why fans get so caught up in it. From the trailer, it seems like it will paint an accurate picture of the event. It’s hard to tell from two minutes, but I get a good feeling about it – despite the fact that Spider-Man is spelled as Spiderman in the trailer. It’s the little things.

The limited run of the documentary starts on April 6.

Lucasfilm Ltd., Nerdist Industries, Octagon and Machinima have teamed up to create an Olympic style torch run with lightsabers. The event, called “Course of the Force” will run from July 7-11, and stretch from Santa Monica to San Diego, finishing up in time for Comic-Con’s preview night.

Participants can purchase and run quarter-mile spots along the course before passing their lightsaber on to the next runner. Best of all is that the proceeds from the event will benefit the Make a Wish Foundation.

New York Comic Con took over the Javits Center in Manhattan last weekend. Comics, toys, and costumes abounded. Saturday and Sunday of the convention sold out, and attendees crowded the floor to shop, get comic books signed, demo video games (like Star Wars: The Old Republic), and attend one of the many panels on the jam-packed schedule. Every convention has its own vibe, and this one was the convention that never stopped moving. Despite being smaller in scale than say, San Diego Comic-Con, it always felt like there was some place to rush to. In the midst of dashing around the convention center, I saw plenty of costumes and toys.

IDW has made an awesome, ballsy move to rid our bookshelves of sparkly vampires and replace them with something a little more hardcore. More specifically, they are offering Twilight fans (or their boyfriends) at Comic-Con the opportunity to (steal and) trade-in any book or graphic novel in the series for a free copy of the 30 Days of Night graphic novel by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith.

A giant convention is happening in Southern California next week. You might have heard of it. If you’re like everyone I know, you’re running around like the proverbial headless chicken stressing over schedules and costumes. Yes, it’s almost time for San Diego Comic-Con.

Sure it’s brimming over with geek hordes and full of rampant commercialism, but it’s the best kind of circus. I adore cozy conventions, but I refuse to miss the insanity that is Comic-Con. Attendees have a ridiculous amount of options. They can choose from the hundreds of panels, visit the rows of booths in the vendor hall, or pick from a long list of off-site functions. If I have that many choices in front me, I have to devise a plan or at least a list. Without any guidance, I’d just flounder for four days. I bet I’m not alone. I’ve scoured the schedule and convention floor map and found a handful of highlights that shouldn’t be missed.

If you are headed to Comic Con this year, you’ll want to stop by Hasbro early because they have a long list of SDCC exclusives that you’ll want to get your hands on—like this Star Wars Return of the Jedi 12-piece vintage collectors set.

More details on the exclusives are available after the break.

It’s becoming harder and harder to actually get to San Diego Comic-Con. If you make it through the gauntlet that is purchasing tickets, you have another quest to face – getting a bed to sleep in. Hotels set aside huge blocks of rooms each year for Comic-Con attendees, and they’re at a discounted price. Even with a lot of rooms reaching from next door to the convention center to several miles away, they disappear fast. It’s not easy to accomodate a sudden influx of 125,000+ people.

Comic-Con uses a system that seems convoluted but apparently works. They release the block of rooms to the general public at the same time. We fight tooth and nail to get through on the set day by internet and phone. It’s bloody – bloody frustrating. I actually can’t complain; I really lucked out last year and got the fifth hotel on my list. I read about plenty of issues getting through and lost information though. This year, hotel rooms go on sale Wednesday, March 9, at 9am PST. I don’t have any magical solutions to help you get a room at the Hilton, but here are some tips that will make your life a little easier next Wednesday morning:

Zach Snyder of 300 and Watchmen fame debuted the trailer for his upcoming Sucker Punch at Comic-Con and it has just been released to the general public. The visuals are awesome (as you might expect), but I’m not sure what to make of it just yet. But keep this in mind—it’s been described as “Alice in Wonderland with guns”. Sounds promising to me.

It started out as an April Fool’s joke, but demand quickly spread and Mattel decided to sell the Wonder Woman invisible jet as a Comic-Con exclusive collectible.  It’s only an empty box, but this will definitely be a unique item for Hot Wheels enthusiasts. Unfortunately, the only place to get one now that Comic-Con is over is to hit up eBay.
