Frodo and Samwise really should have checked their smart phone before they tried strolling into Mordor. Then, maybe they would have called the eagles to help out much sooner. To try your luck, visit Google Maps and look for walking directions from The Shire to Mordor.

Google Maps Street View feature is taking the party indoors. Businesses in certain areas can volunteer to have their interiors fully photographed, and Comics Toons N’ Toys in Tustin, California, stepped up to bat. The shop is now entirely explorable on the internet. You can virtually walk through the store and get a feel for what it’s like. Neat—and to me, a little weird.

From CubicleBot: As it has done with other recent natural disasters, Google has set up online tools to help victims of today’s devastating earthquake in Japan.
The Crisis Response page provides a lot of useful information and resources and its Person Finder tool allows families and friends to post messages and connect with loved ones who may be caught up in the disaster. Typing in a person’s name will pull up all known information as to their whereabouts and condition.
That having been said, if you know anything about an individual that may be missing in this crisis, don’t hesitate to update that info in the Person Finder.
UPDATE: The Red Cross has added a donation site. Check it out if you would like to help.

The Chinese new year begins on February 3rd, but Android is getting the party started right now. However, getting your hands on one of these figures isn’t going to be easy.

In case you haven’t heard, the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)-enabled Google Nexus S is available at Best Buy starting today. To promote the release, Google has brought back the unboxing ninjas—but as you will soon see, the fight got a little out of hand.
So go ahead and check it out on YouTube. And here’s a little tip: wait until the end of the animation. A pair of nunchucks will appear below the comments that you can use to smash up the screen.

This little Android robot was unveiled at the Google Developer’s Conference in Tokyo yesterday and includes features like the ability to walk, move its hands and head and play audio. Companies can even rent “RIC Android” for $6200 a day as a promotional tool.
As you will see in the video after the break, anyone considering that strategy might want to hold off until is confirmed that RIC Android isn’t a Nazi.

Steve Jobs gave him the apple while dressed like a witch. Android is a great OS, but it’s way too trusting.
These iPhone decals are currently sold out, but stock should be back in soon.

Outside of a police car (and maybe a tank) there aren’t many vehicles out there that draw the unusual brand of attention that driving a Google Street View car can. By “unusual” I mean, that it has the potential to outwardly affect all of motorists and pedestrians around you (unless they are wearing this shirt). After all, no one wants to get caught picking their nose or taking a leak in the street when Google comes calling.
If you want this power over people’s behavior, F.A.T. has put together a complete set of instructions on how you can build your own phony Googlemobile on the semi-cheap. Check out a video of the build after the break.

This map envelope concept uses an image from Google Maps to pinpoint the exact location of the sender. Amusing, but I can see a whole line of offbeat postcards with this theme. Instead of some picturesque scene, you get a satellite image of the exact location of the crappy convenience store or hotel lobby where you bought it.
