Japan Is A Magical Place

If this is how Japan does road construction, I can only imagine how crazy and awesome the Olympics are going to be in 2020.

These are Iron Man mash-ups like you’ve never seen them before. Artist Sam Kwok uses amazing Hot Toys Iron Man action figures and makes them even more amazing with sculpted pieces and a new paint job. His vision takes Iron Man everywhere from Spawn to Hello Kitty.

felicia hello kitty

I’ll bet you’re wondering about that picture. I’m just going to let Felicia Day’s quote be the explanation:

Now that I learned that Hello Kitty isn’t a cat but a little girl, my dreams can come true and this will be my future family portrait.

That quote is just one of the myriad reactions out there to the (OMG SHOCKING) news that Sanrio’s Hello Kitty isn’t a cat.

This news comes from a correction made by Sanrio to wording used by University of Hawaii anthropologist Christine R. Yano for her upcoming Hello Kitty retrospective at the Japanese American National Museum in October.

“I was corrected — very firmly,” Yano told the L.A. Times. “That’s one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty.”

Yep, Hello Kitty is not a cat. Charmy Kitty is a cat. Also, according to her back story her real name is Kitty White, she’s British, and her height and weight are measured in apples.

Cue “The More You Know” graphic.

tmnt hello kitty

Your favorite heroes in a half shell just got a dose of feline cuteness. Hello Kitty goes with everything, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. My favorite part about these six inch figures is that the bows match the masks. It’s pretty perfect.

They don’t seem easy to track down though. The figures are limited to 1,000 pieces and appear to be $73 each. They look like they are available through DCT, but since I can’t read Japanese I can’t tell for sure.

hello kitty robot mech 2

The best Hello Kitty toy is not a cute and cuddly plush, it’s this new action figure from Sanrio and Bandai. Since both brands are celebrating their 40th anniversary, they’re releasing this beast to mark the occasion. It’s a Hello Kitty mech with an array of fantastic features. I can’t decide if I like the shooting rocket fists or the miniature Hello Kitty operator that goes inside the head more. Probably the miniature since it’s only .9 inches tall to fit inside the 4 inch figure, but it’s a tough choice.

You’ll be able to track this toy down next summer (June 2014) and it will cost you less than $50. I’m going to need one.

earless 2

You just never know what moments of boredom will bring. It could lead to exciting inventions or fascinating stories but sometimes – perhaps most of the time – it leads to silly things like removing ears from well known cartoon characters. The ear-less trend started in a thread on 2ch, Japan’s largest forum, and suddenly we have altered Pikachu, Hello Kitty, Mickey Mouse, and more. As it turns out, ears add a lot of character.

Be traumatized by ear-less cartoons after the break.

Instead of just being a comforter with a picture of Spider-Man swinging through the sky, this bedding actually turns your bed into Spider-Man. It comes with a stuffed head, arms, and feet and zips right up over a twin mattress set.

Hello Kitty can make any franchise hit an insane level of  precious – including Street Fighter.

Toynami offered a Hello Kitty and Chun Li plush at Comic-Con, and it flew off the shelves. If you weren’t among the lucky few to snag one you can make up for it by pre-ordering these cute PVC action figures featuring six Street Fighter characters mashed up with Sanrio goodness. The figures (they come two per pack) are estimated to arrive in March 2013.
