As previously reported, Mattel is taking orders for Hoverboard replicas which have all of the looks and none of the functionality of the on-screen Back To The Future version. Now web series Beyond the Marquee is giving viewers a behind the scenes look at the replica board’s creation. When all is said and done, you’ll get a sense of Mattel’s attention to detail on this piece.
Check it out after the break.

As promised last month, official Back to the Future Hoverboard replicas from Mattel are now available for pre-order. The board is a 1:1 replica of the film version right down to the smallest detail (except for that whole hovering thing). It even features various “whooshing” sounds sampled from the movie.
Even if the board doesn’t hover, it’s not a bad deal for $120—especially since each board will come with a version scaled for 6-inch action figures.
Keep in mind that because of the high cost of production, Mattel must receive a minimum number of orders between now and March 20th in order to ship. Customers won’t be charged if the quota isn’t met, but not getting a board would be truly tragic. So pitch in and order while you can.

Before you get too excited—no, this hoverboard doesn’t float just yet—but it is a 1:1 replica of the Back To The Future movie version that’s actually made by Mattel. There’s even a hole where Marty ripped of the handlebars.
From the press release:
Back to the Future Hover Board: Finally! This totally awesome 1:1 replica of the hover board from the BTTF 2 and BTTF 3 films includes multiple whooshing sounds and will glide over most surfaces (does not actually “hover” – check back in 2015 for that feature). We’ll be taking orders for it March 1 – March 20, 2012, and the final product will be shipped around November/December 2012. Because this is such a high-cost item, there will be a minimum number of orders required to go into production. If we don’t receive the minimum orders, won’t go into production and customers will not be charged. The price will be announced later this month. (Note: Hover board does not work on water.)
BTTF fans are pretty fanatical, so I would expect that that minimum order threshold shouldn’t pose much of a problem. I mean, Nike blew through 1500 Mag sneaker replicas at thousands of dollars a pop even though they didn’t auto-lace.
Pre-orders will be taken on MattyCollector.com.

If the Hoverboard was released today, would you rush out and buy one? As you will see after the break CollegeHumor doesn’t think it will worth the investment.
Let me just say that when I was a kid in the ’80s nobody wore helmets, coffee didn’t tell you it was hot and people could freely stab their friends with lawn darts. It was a better time dammit.

French artist Nils Guadagnin has actually made a working hoverboard like the one we all lusted after in Back to the Future II. Unfortunately, a kitten is probably the only thing capable of riding it—but hey, it’s a start. It gives me hope that when I’m 60 I might be able to get back into skateboarding because hoverboards are finally a reality.

If you are a big fan of the Back to the Future series (part II in particular), you will love the Pit Bull Hoverboard and Slamball Bat replicas. Just don’t let your nerdy imagination get the best of you—the board does not actually hover. An additional image of the board and the Slamball bat replica are available after the break.
