As you probably already know, Raiders of the Lost Ark was an homage to the serials and adventure films that Lucas and Spielberg loved as children. The following video illustrates that point with 30 adventure films shot between 1919 and 1973 presented side-by-side with the opening sequence of Raiders.
Of course, it’s unlikely that all of the films and shots used here were direct influences on Raiders, but it’s still a good example of how thoroughly the style was incorporated by Spielberg.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jeff Gurwood recreated the entire temple sequence in stop motion format, using nothing but action figures and art supplies. Dubbed “Indyanimation” the resulting film is so good, you may forget you’re watching toys. Check it out after the break.

Steven Spielberg is a prankster. While he was filming Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom, he decided to mess with Harrison Ford. When Ford is captured by the Thuggee in the film, Spielberg arranged for Barbra Streisand, Carrie Fisher, and Irvin Kershner to make an appearance on set. Did I mention that Streisand is wearing dominatrix gear? Footage of this joke has been unearthed and though the sound and visual quality is poor, it’s absolutely worth checking out.

An Indiana Jones superfan named Matt Busch teamed up with Lucasfilm to create an official Indiana Jones World Map detailing the locations where Jones made archaeological discoveries, including those from the novels, comic books, Young Indy TV shows, videogames and more.
There are 36 different archeological artifacts displayed, each illustrated where Indy discovered it, and numbered chronologically. 3 Legend sections list info on the artifacts, including name, city and country, year, title of the story the artifact was discovered in, followed by symbols.
You can purchase a limited edition 24″ X 36″ print from Matt’s website for $44.95. All proceeds will benefit American Disabled Veterans. Learn more by checking out the video after the break.

We can’t be sure about how accurate this information is, but it seems that Simon Pegg was chatting with Paul Freeman (aka René Belloq) about Raiders (naturally) when he shared an unusual bit of information about the snake scene.
Pegg tweets:
“Fab stories from Paul Freeman today. Apparently there may be a community of snakes living at Elstree Studios descended from Raiders escapees.”
It certainly seems plausible that snakes could have escaped the set—and it’s interesting (and possibly a little scary) to think that their descendants could stil wander around the property 30 years later.

Indiana Jones isn’t the cuddly type (though he did marry in that last film, which just seemed wrong), but this plush version is definitely squeezable.
