It looks like it came straight out of Skyrim, but this image of an auroral storm over Arctic Henge in northern Iceland was actually featured by NASA recently.
Photographed by Stephane Vetter.

Italian photographer Federico Chiesa imagines what villains would look like in old age. Vader is holding up pretty well, though I’m surprised he’s not on an oxygen tank.

Artist Alex Gross has created a series of cabinet cards featuring Victorian era pictures reimagined as sci-fi icons from today. I’ll bet the guy in this photo didn’t see that coming, but Nicolas Cage might have.

We’ve seen the work of Marcus Reugels in the past (a photographer famous for taking shots of water droplets refracting the images behind them) but these Spider-Man and Batman versions are right up our alley.
Check out the Batman version after the break.

Artist Stephen Hayford did something special to celebrate the upcoming release of the Star Wars saga on Blu-ray. He set up a diorama with action figures recreating a cut scene from Return of the Jedi—a Tatooine sandstorm sequence. This would have happened after the heroes escaped from Jabba the Hutt. Then he photographed the scene in such a way that it looks like a matte painting.

Gah! If you want to hide from zombies, you go here. If you want to find zombies, head to this abandoned underground crypt in Belgium.

Believe it or not, a company called LensRentals thinks people would be willing to rent a chess set with “70-200 f/2.8 pawns, 600mm f/4 Kings and 500mm f4 Queens, 400mm f/2.8 Bishops, 300mm f/2.8 Knights, and 200mm f/2.0 Rooks in black (Nikon) and white (Canon)” for $9,221.25 per week (plus $1100-$2400 for shipping).
But wait! If you would like to purchase the set it will set you back a cool $151,202.17—and that’s the bargain price. They say that once the Canon Mk II Supertelephoto lenses are released the price will increase “substantially”.
But wait, there’s even more! If you purchase before September 1st you get a $13 LensRentals shirt! Holy sh*tballs how could you pass this deal up? I know how you do it. Buy some of these cheap camera lens mugs and reproduce the entire setup for a couple hundred bucks.

Unlike traditional muli-tools, the upcoming Gerber Steady can help you capture photos of the pristine wilderness, the giant trout you just caught, or the bear that’s about to maul you to get that giant trout.
The interesting feature of the Gerber Steady is that it includes a tripod with a standard screw mount for a camera. So those huge claws will be crisp and clear.
There are 12 tools in all, most of them standard, but unless there’s a powerful shotgun in there you are in serious trouble right now. Look for it to hit store shelves sometime in the Spring for $65.
I’ve seen many a Rube Goldberg machine in my day, and I have to say that this version created by 2D Photography has to be one of the most impressive. It’s definitely worth watching all the way through.
Not only did they manage to incorporate photography equipment throughout the entire four-minute cycle, they also managed to take two portraits. They even took some major risks with some of the sections, including a distressing bit with a bouncing golf ball.
For all their knowledge of photography, it seems as though the creators have never heard of the self-timer function. Live and learn. Check out the video after the break.

There have been other, even more awkward SLR mounts for iPhones in the past, but none of them compare to this version from Photojojo.
What it does is allow you to mount your Canon EOS or Nikon SLR lenses to your iPhone 4/iPhone 3G or 3GS to give your phone “powerful depth of field and manual focus”.
