The Dark Knight is about to get a whole lot brighter.
Toy collectors and Batman fans, rejoice! This set of multicolored Batman action figures is on the way. Last year, DC ran a poll featuring a bunch of abandoned toy designs and invited fans to vote for the one they wanted. This colorful collection was the resounding winner, and the toys are now in production. Hoorah! (Click the preview image above for a closer look at the toys).
And now, for a little comics history…
These days Batman is serious business, but long before the darker take on the character, decades before Seal had uttered a single note of “Kiss From a Rose”, the comics were a distinctly… sillier affair. Which makes sense. I mean, we’re talking about a guy who dresses up as a bat to stop clowns, mad hatters and people with an arguably unhealthy obsession with ice from being generally mischievous.
One of these stories, “The Rainbow Batman“, involves sidekick Robin’s civilian alter-ego Dick Grayson breaking his arm. If Robin goes out with a broken arm, people will figure out his secret identity! And so, rather than fly solo for a few nights to allow his preteen sidekick time to heal, Batman decides to wear suits in a variety of garish colors. The hope is that these ridiculous Bat-costumes will distract the thugs of Gotham City from the Boy Wonder’s damaged limb, presumably so Robin has time to slip away and ask Commissioner Gordon to sign his cast.
The figures will hit store shelves in August as a set retailing $70.
