Personally, I’m a digital cable guy. If it wasn’t for the season pass option for out of market sports, I would think that there is little reason to opt for satellite television – until now.

The LyngBox is set to make it’s debut at the IBC show in Amsterdam (September 8th – 12th) and it being billed as the “ultimate satellite receiver.” Take a look at these specs and you will understand why:

  • HDTV support (720p and 1080i)
  • Supports H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and MPEG-2
  • Inbuilt tuners for both satellite TV (DVB-S/DVB-S2) and terrestrial TV (DVB-T)
  • Internal slot system which makes it possible to install an additional tuner card
  • 4:3 and 16:9 TV screen format support and teletext decoding
  • Dual Common Interface slots for usage with pay-TV-channels
  • PVR functionality with inbuilt hard disk
  • Possibilities to store recordings on an external DVD-recorder connected with USB2
  • DiSEqC 1.2 support for controlling LNB and motorised dish
  • Remote control as standard and a wireless remote keyboard as accessories
  • Channel selection by typing the name (or the beginning of the name) of the channel on the keyboard
  • View images from a digital camera connected to the LyngBox
  • The LyngBox can store up to 50000 channels

Along with the LyngSat Network (free to access via internet connection), the LyngBox can provide automatic channel installation and updates based on the user’s location and equipment. So now you can’t complain that there is nothing on when you can automatically install all receivable channels – including those that are free-to-air.

There has been no word yet on pricing or availability of the LyngBox. More information should be available during the course of the IBC show.
