Hughes The Force: a John Hughes Star Wars Fan Film [Video]

“High school. You’ll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.”

Imagine your favorite John Hughes films – Weird Science, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – mixed with Star Wars. It seems like a natural fit, but the subjects haven’t been mashed together until the short film, Hughes the Force. The film’s main characters are the typical geeky guys in high school. They can only get into the coolest party of the year if they bring a hot girl… so they make one from a Slave Leia action figure.

I know, with that many references to pull from, it could go horribly awry. It’s so easy to overload fan films with gratuitous quotes and lightsaber fights. This film doesn’t do that. Not even close. Besides having a high production value, Hughes the Force is charming, funny, and full of moments that will make you laugh and nod your head in recognition. And please don’t let the length (it clocks in at 35 minutes) stop you from watching it. You’ll enjoy every minute.

I have one final point. If you watch Star Wars: The Clone Wars, you’ll be glad to know that the voices of Obi-Wan Kenobi (James Arnold Taylor) and Padme Amidala (Cat Taber) appear in this fan film as their characters from the animated series for the first time! And Kevin Smith makes a very cool cameo appearance.

Check out the short film after the break.
