The word around the web is that Intel will be releasing a four core processor for two socket systems in early 2007.

The project , codenamed “Clovertown” is intended to bring lower end systems up to eight cores. Another project, codenamed “Tigertown” will bring the quad core chip to higher end four socket systems.

Arstechnica sums it up best when they say -”The accelerated introduction of a quad-core design will put Intel on track to match AMD in the all-important “number of cores per chip” metric that is replacing GHz as a single, consumer- and press-friendly number that can be easily used for meaningless horserace-style comparisons.”

This news comes only days after the announcement that Intel will be rolling out 45nm chips by the end of 2007.
