Producer Gail Katz Acquires Film And TV Rights For Settlers Of Catan

Settlers of Catan is one of the best tabletop strategy games ever. And with 22M board versions sold worldwide in 30 languages and 50 countries, it’s popularity speaks for itself.

But can it be the basis for a good TV show or a movie?

Producer Gail Katz thinks so since she’s scooped up the TV and film rights. In a statement to Deadline, Gail spoke about her introduction to the game.

“I’ve been wanting to see an adaptation of the game for years, ever since my Catan-obsessed college-aged kids introduced me to it. The island of Catan is a vivid, visual, exciting and timeless world with classic themes and moral challenges that resonate today.  There is a tremendous opportunity to take what people love about the game and its mythology as a starting point for the narrative.”

Her previous ventures include producing The Perfect Storm and Air Force One. Gail is currently working on Pawn Sacrifice, a Cold War drama based on the life of chess legend Bobby Fischer, starring Tobey Maguire, Liev Schreiber, Peter Sarsgaard and Michael Stuhlbarg.

If you are unfamiliar, the object of the game is to build your roads and “settlements” while bargaining for the land’s limited resources. Within the simplicity of the game design in that of the board layout and card decks, the players quickly become experts in planning and decision making. It’s imperative to develop cunning skills to make friend of foe of your opponents in order to win. Many a nights have been lost to over-enthused players at my house. And it was all worth it.
