UMD…Done

According to Reuters, movies on the PSP may be a thing of the past.
The article reads: “Disappointing sales have slowed the flow of movies on the proprietary Universal Media Disc to a mere trickle. At least two major studios have completely stopped releasing movies on UMD, while others are either toying with the idea or drastically cutting back.”
Retailers are following suit - including Wal-Mart which is on the verge of dumping the format entirely.
A high ranking executive summed up the situation thusly - “We are on hiatus with UMD,” he said. “Releasing titles on UMD is the exception rather than the rule. No one’s even breaking even on them.”
Sony is currently investigating alternative ways to get consumers interested in the PSP as something other than a gaming platform, including the possibility of connecting the device to T.V. sets for playback.
The bottom line here is that movie studios are currently focused on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, not content for a device that is primarily for gaming.
