As many of you have heard by now, one of the main gripes about the XBox 360 has been its tendency to overheat. A company named CoolIT is attempting to provide a solution to this problem with a liquid cooling unit prototype that will be revealed to the public during CES 2006.
“CoolIT’s approach is not rocket science, but rather a system that was retrofitted from existing PC cooling solutions. Geoff Lyon, chief executive of CoolIT systems, explained that the liquid cooling multiple thermo-electric coolers, which he calls MTECs, to chill the anti-freeze solution. The liquid then is pumped past both the Xbox 360’s main and graphics processor. “Basically, the Xbox 360 cooler is an updated and modified version of our Freezone PC coolers,” said Lyon.”
Generally, when you think of liquid cooling, overclocking comes to mind. Lyon noted “The system wasn’t built specifically for overclocking, but if people use it to overclock, I’d be thrilled.”
Again, the CoolIT XBox unit is only a prototype at this stage. However, Lyon believes that it could become a retail product in the near future. The company is using its presentaion at CES 2006 to gauge consumer interest.
I like the product as a cooling solution to the 360 - but I’m not convinced that this is problem is widespread enough to single-handedly make the CoolIt system a success. On the other hand, if it can be used to overclock a 360, I could definitely see a viable customer base among hardcore gamers.
