Dell Sells Server to Support Two Desktop Network

Do you Alienware customers wonder what it is going to be like when Dell gets it’s hooks into the company? They would have you believe that that they are going to leave them as a standalone company, no major changes other than piggybacking on Dell’s ability to drive in supply of components and use their ordering system to enhance the Alienware experience. I, however, see the future of the Dell Alienware experience more along the lines of what this customer experienced.

Dell is refusing to give a refund to a customer who believes she was wrongly sold a server.

Kate was asked by her boss to contact Dell to buy two new desktop computers and “something to link them”. Dell sold her two PCs and a PowerEdge server, ironically with only one network card.

Kate realised her mistake because she spoke to a more technically-literate friend (Register reader Chris Morton) who told her she needed a cable to link two computers, not a server. Chris asked Dell to refund Kate because the server was effectively mis-sold. Her company has only two employees.

But Dell refused to give her a refund because the order was made through its business channel.

Not that Alienware purchasers are going to be pushed into buying servers, but this is typical of the inflexibility that the large scale Dell of today exhibits to it’s customers. I would have thought that as soon as they contacted Dell with this story of silliness, Dell would capitulate and refund the money with an apology. Wouldn’t cost them much in terms of sales, but with their refusal, look at the bad press they are getting. And this is the top notch type of business practice that they will eventually foist upon the users of Alienware.
