If you have ever wondered how Mozilla makes money on Firefox, it may be surprising to know that they raked in $52.9 million dollars in 2005. Figures have not been disclosed for 2006 but you can bet that it is a hell of a lot more than the previous year.
So how do they do it? The answer is Google.
Believe it or not, every time you run a Google search in the Firefox toolbar and click on an ad from the results page Mozilla is making money (about 80% of the ad revenue from each click to be exact.) They also make money from searches made on the Firefox start page.
Put the clicks from millions of users together and your making some serious cash – and Mozilla certainly deserves it. They make a great product.
