Last week, a House of Representatives subcommittee approved a bill that seeks to ban internet gambling.
If passed, the ban would affect nearly 2300 websites and cripple a $12 billion industry.
Republican Bob Goodlatte of Virgina chimed in saying, “Virtual betting parlors have attempted to avoid the application of United States law by locating themselves offshore and out of our jurisdictional reach. The offshore companies use Internet sites that are unlicensed, untaxed and unregulated.”
My guess is that the people who developed this bill do not have a clear understanding of what it would take to enforce it. I find it hard to believe that a nationwide ban could be successfully implemented given the complexity of the internet and the current popularity of games like Texas Hold-em Poker.
