My news about about the new SyFy show Fangasm came via cast member Molly McIsaac’s Facebook feed and since Molly’s one of the geek girls in my online and con circles, I clicked that link to check out what the show was all about.
Syfy describes the show thusly:
From the producer of Jersey Shore comes Fangasm – a six-part docuseries that celebrates the incredibly unique, often misunderstood, and infinitely fascinating fan girl and fan boy culture. The show follows seven pop culture-obsessed fans (whose passions range from comic books and collectibles to science fiction and fantasy) living together in an LA apartment complex and working together at Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo. The seven must contend with each others oversized personalities and conflicting fandom as they vie for an opportunity to work within Lee’s organization. Because when different passions come together, you get a real big bang.
Now, I’ll be honest, I know people get worried anytime people try and combine “reality” TV and geeks. But there are a few things here that make me think this show’s got its heart in the right place: it’s only 6 weeks, they seem to have found interesting people, and I know people involved who aren’t likely to make nerds look bad because they are nerds.
I reached out to Molly for a quick comment and asked her what she was hoping people would take away from the show when they watched.
Molly replied, “I want people to know that geek girls can be sexy, strong, confident and badass!”
Something tells me between she and Regina Carpinelli, we’re gonna see some some fiercely geeky ladies. In a good way.
Check out a quick promo clip after the break.
