I’ve been an Underworld fan since the beginning and, while I’ve seen every film at least twice, I’m willing to admit that not every one of them was a masterpiece even by B-movie standards. But if there’s a film that gets closest to the original, it’s Underworld: Blood Wars.
After watching the bonus features, it’s clear that kindred nature was deliberate and very much in the mind of director Anna Foerster (side note: she’s also responsible for one of the most powerful and disturbing episodes of Outlander; “Wentworth Prison”). The look and feel of Underworld: Blood Wars goes back to the original and grounds the film into the universe fans love, but also pushes forward into new territory when it comes to effects (the transformation of a 100 Lycans at once is a new challenge for Blood Wars) and the story.
The DVD bonus materials include two featurettes called “Old & New Blood” and “The Evil Evolved”. These are also part of the Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, and digital bonus materials which include two other featurettes called “The Evolution of Selene” and “Building a Blood War”.
The Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD also includes an official Underworld: Blood Wars graphic novel, which is exclusive to iTunes if you’re getting the digital version.
Underworld: Blood Wars debuts on digital April 11 and 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray/DVD on April 25th. If you’re an Underworld fan, you’ll definitely want to pick it up.
