It looks like Martin Freeman was telling the truth yesterday.
The BBC has indeed confirmed that Sherlock will return for the standard three episode series in 2015 which will be preceded by a standalone special. The exact dates for the return haven’t been revealed, but filming will begin in January and Freeman did say that he believed the special would kick things off around Christmas 2015.
Sherlock co-creator, executive producer and co-writer Steven Moffat ushered in the news with the following statement:
A special, plus a new series of three episodes — it’s a record-breaking run! Of course, it’s far too early to say what’s coming, but we’re reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John is the very last thing you’d expect…” It’s always the last thing we expect, isn’t it?
Fellow Sherlock co-creator, executive producer and co-writer Mark Gatiss added:
Series Four! At last! It’s always special to return to Sherlock but this time it’s even more special as we’re doing… a Special! Not only that, we’ll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before. The whole Sherlock team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on — again!
Sure, 18 months is a long time to wait, but that’s the price of being a Sherlock fan. Fortunately, the wait is always worth it.
