Yup, you read that right, the classic Atari game Space Invaders is on the fast track to becoming a major motion picture. According to the LA Times one studio is currently acquiring the rights to the game in an attempt to bring it to the big screen:
Warner Bros. is negotiating to acquire feature rights to the landmark shooter from Taito, the Japanese company that originally manufactured the game. If the rights issues all work out, the project would bring on Hollywood fixtures Mark Gordon, Jason Blum and Guymon Casady as producers.
Space Invaders is not the only classic game in consideration at the moment either. As we reported in February a movie version of Missile Command is also in the works. All I can say is that I hope John Leguizamo (the king of classic gaming movies imho) is in this sucker. The method acting he brought to Super Mario Brothers would have brought a tear to Lee Strasberg’s eye.
