dark knight

I have never mastered the game of chess, but if I had this board I’d be willing to give it another try. Instead of boring white and black pieces, this one has 2 1/2″ to 5 1/2″ tall pewter pieces that look like the villains and heros of Gotham City. Batman, Robin, Batgirl and Commissioner Gordon battle The Joker, Catwoman, Riddler and Penguin on an oversized 20″ board. At the press of a Bat Signal button, 50 LED lights brighten the board and the Gotham cityscape beneath as well as projecting a Bat Signal into the sky. Preorder know and play chess with Batman when this ships on January 15th.

Some say there were a few plot holes in The Dark Knight Rises. Naturally, the guys from How It Should Have Ended swooped in and came up with some alternate endings that make far more sense than the things that happened on the movie screen.

I don’t know how I feel about The Dark Knight watching me while I do my business. He looks very intimidating and also like he’s going to throw that roll of toilet paper at my head. Nope. This is not the bathroom decor for me, but apparently there are several people who like the idea since there’s more than one of these out there.

Watch these videos and you’ll see it’s impossible not to make the comparison. The first is a 1979 interview with actor and musician Tom Waits. The later is a clip of Heath Ledger as The Joker in The Dark Knight. Their mannerisms and speech patterns are so alike that it seems a real possibility that Waits was Ledger’s inspiration. The two actually worked with each other in the 2009 film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus which was still in production at the time of Ledger’s death. Watch the videos and judge for yourself.

Mondo is known for releasing beautiful posters in such limited editions that getting them is nearly impossible. Now they’re giving you the chance to get one without having to sell your soul or promise your first-born to the Devil. A special The Dark Knight Rises poster designed by popular artist Olly Moss will be available from 12:01 a.m. CST Wednesday July 18 until 11:59 p.m. CST and there’s no preset edition size. Everyone who orders during that 24 hour window will get a poster. They’ll sell for $40 and measure 16″ x 24″ which is slightly smaller than the limited edition run that was sold at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend.

Creative director Justin Ishmael explained why Mondo decided to break away from its business model and offer this poster in what may be a huge edition that likely won’t command the high prices of their other posters.

After hearing about the release of Arkham City, artist Duks Abii spent three hours creating this Dark Knight Rises speed art using Photoshop and Final Cut Pro, then transformed the entire creative process into a 3 minute time lapse. Check it out after the jump.

Before the midnight release of The Avengers, some AMC Theatres ran an all day marathon of all Marvel movies. They plan to do the same before The Dark Knight Rises on July 19th. The marathon will be much shorter than the Marvel one which makes it more appealing to me. I love marathons, but I prefer to experience long stretches of watching stuff on my couch at home.

Tickets for the marathon will go on sale on June 11 at AMC. I’d also keep an eye on that site to find out which theatres will be hosting the event.

If you were enthralled with Heath Ledger’s performance in The Dark Knight to the point where you consider every Jokerless scene filler, then you’ll love this 10 minute video which strings together all of his dialogue in a supercut of crazy.

Check it out after the break.
