Mark Smiley and James Garrett have a list of likes that includes, at the very least, three things: LEGO, Star Wars, and LEGO Star Wars. That’s all the motivation the pair needed to create a LEGO replica of BB-8 that actually spins on its own.
Well, we say “on its own” – it sits on a base with a teeny-tiny LEGO crank that, when turned by your fleshy human fingers, allows their LEGO BB-8 to roll forwards. And it’s adorable!
Made entirely from standard LEGO components (BB-8’s body is actually a repurposed sphere from this Sebulba Podracer set), they constructed the set and painted the parts to look just like everybody’s favorite rolling round roll-around Droid. In fact, so proud of their project were Smiley and Garrett that they posted it to LEGO Ideas where, once it gets enough votes, LEGO will consider it for production as a properly licensed LEGO set.
